Newcastle University ก่อตั้งขึ้นเมื่อปี 1963 โดยมหาวิทยาลัยได้เริ่มต้นจากการเป็นโรงเรียนที่สอนทางด้าน Medicine and Surgery มหาวิทยาลัยเป็นพันธมิตรกับ University of Durham และยังได้รับการคัดเลือกให้เป็นศูนย์กลางระดับชาติทางด้านการแพทย์ รวมถึงสิ่งอำนวยความสะดวกในการค้นคว้าวิจัยเกี่ยวกับโรคมะเร็ง ซึ่งหลักสูตรที่มีชื่อเสียงมายาวนานของมหาวิทยาลัยคือหลักสูตรแพทยศาสตร์
